Educational Involvment

2024-2025 Mentorship of Colorado School of Mines Timber Strong Competition ASCE Spring Conference

Felten Group assisting the team with wood design. Two 4x4 Douglas Fir #2 beams were contributed to the design—one for the cantilever beam that was tested, and the other to resist overturning forces from the shear walls on the second floor. Instruction was provided to the team on how to apply the National Design Specification (NDS) for wood design to their structure, enabling them to complete their calculations. Additionally, classes were given on the development of wind and seismic loads. For the current year, meetings are being held every other week to ensure the team progresses further than they had by the holidays of the previous year.

Industry Involvment

PTI – Voting and Associate Memberships to the DC10.5 Slab-On-Ground Committee.

Supporting the further development of the PTI code. We attend committee meetings as well as participating in subcommittees including the Stable Soils Task Group and the IBC/IRC Multiple Task Group. The DC10.5 Slab-on-Grade (SOG) Committee is currently working on updating the code for the next edition. All time dedicated to these efforts is volunteered to improve the code for future releases.

Community Involvement

Our office had the privilege when contributing to Thrive Arizona’s renovation project by assisting with design and architectural construction documents as an in-kind donation. We help created three offices for staff that work with aging-out orphans, ensuring they had functional workspace. Also, the apartment’s laundry room was updated to optimize the space with new washer/dryer units, sinks, cubbies, and countertops. Most important was the two boys' restrooms which entailed replacing fixtures, floor tiles, toilet and urinal partitions, and freshening up the paint to improve both functionality and comfort for aging-out orphans.
